What goes in a jewelry tech pack?

Most quotation problems are specification problems. A tech pack is one page of numbers that removes the ambiguity — and it takes an hour to write.

Short answer

A usable jewelry tech pack contains a dimensioned drawing or annotated image, material grade, thickness and width in millimetres, finish, closure and findings, logo method and placement, target weight, size run, packaging, and quantity per style. Missing any one of these forces the factory to assume, and assumptions are what samples get rejected over.

A tech pack is not a design document. It is the manufacturing instruction, and its job is to make three quotes comparable and one sample predictable.

The nine fields

  1. Reference and drawing. An annotated image with dimensions, or a dimensioned drawing. Arrows with numbers, not adjectives.
  2. Material. 304 or 316L, stated per component — body, post, clasp. Mixed grades are common and should be explicit.
  3. Dimensions. Thickness, width, length or diameter, with tolerance.
  4. Finish. Polished, brushed, or PVD with the colour named. Specify whether edges are matte or bright.
  5. Findings. Clasp type, post type, jump rings soldered or not.
  6. Logo. Method, size in millimetres, placement, and whether it is cut through the coating.
  7. Target weight. Grams, middle size.
  8. Size run. Numbers, not letters.
  9. Packaging and quantity. Per style, with the box or card if it is custom.

Why thickness and weight travel together

Thickness tells the factory what to make. Weight tells you whether they did. A sample that matches the drawing but weighs 30% more is a different product wearing the same drawing — and only a stated target weight catches it before bulk.

What a tech pack is not

It is not a mood board, a Pinterest screenshot, or a paragraph of description. Those are useful for the design conversation and useless for quotation, because two suppliers reading "delicate but substantial" will build two different things and both will be right.

The version discipline

Number the pack and date it. When something changes — a new clasp, a thicker band — issue a new version and say what changed. Most disputes about "that isn't what we agreed" are documents without dates.

If you have never written one, send a reference photo with the nine fields answered in a list. That is enough to quote accurately, and it is the format we quote against.
