Which metal for a men's ring?
The men's ring category is sold on durability claims, and the three main metals fail in different ways. Choosing between them is a decision about what the wearer will tolerate, not about which is strongest.

Stainless steel is the cheapest and most workable, machines well, takes PVD colour, and cannot be resized because it is too hard to stretch. Titanium is roughly half the weight, hypoallergenic in practice, and also not resizable. Tungsten carbide is the hardest and most scratch-resistant, heaviest, and brittle — it shatters under impact rather than bending. For a first range, stainless steel offers the widest design freedom at the lowest cost.
Three metals, three marketing stories, three different failure modes. The useful comparison is practical: what the piece weighs, what happens when it is dropped, and whether the size can be changed.
The comparison
| Stainless steel | Titanium | Tungsten carbide | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight | Medium | Very light | Heavy |
| Scratch resistance | Good | Good | Excellent |
| Resizing | Not possible | Not possible | Not possible |
| Colour options | Full PVD range | Limited | Limited |
| Impact behaviour | Bends | Bends | Can shatter |
| Relative cost | Low | Medium | Medium–high |
Stainless steel
Machinable, polishable, and the only one of the three that takes a full PVD colour range including black, gold and gunmetal. That matters because men's ranges increasingly use colour as the differentiator.
- Limitation: it will not stretch, so a size error is a remake.
- Watch for: brushed finishes hide scratches; mirror finishes show every one.
Titanium
Roughly 40-45% lighter than steel at the same volume, which is the entire selling point — a wide band that does not feel heavy.
- Limitation: light also reads as less substantial to some customers, so width usually needs to increase to compensate.
- Finishing: takes a matte or brushed look well; colour options are narrow.
Tungsten carbide
The hardest of the three by a wide margin and effectively scratch-proof in daily wear.
- Limitation: brittle. A dropped tungsten ring on tile can crack, and a cracked ring cannot be repaired.
- Also: heavy. An 8 mm tungsten band has real presence and real weight.
The sizing problem, stated plainly
None of the three resizes. That makes sizing accuracy a commercial issue rather than a convenience one — publish inner diameter in millimetres, offer an exchange policy, and expect the first size run to be wrong once.
What to stock first
Stainless steel, in two finishes, sizes 9-13. It is the cheapest way to test the category and the only one that lets you add colour without changing material. Add titanium when weight becomes the customer's stated objection, and tungsten when the range needs a premium, scratch-proof hero.
All three are produced on the same finishing lines here, which means a men's range can mix metals without mixing quality.
